How to Start a Family Bible Reading Habit
2026-10-16
Most families want to read the Bible together. Fewer actually do it every day. The difference is rarely desire, it is having a simple plan and keeping it small enough to survive a busy week. Here is how to begin.
1. Start smaller than you think
Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sundays. If you aim for a quick win, your kids will feel it is doable and you will feel it is possible. You can always grow later.
2. Choose a time and a place
Pick one time you can protect: breakfast, after dinner, or bedtime. Use the same spot. Habits stick to cues, and a familiar place helps kids settle in. Remember, the best time is the one you will actually keep.
3. Decide what you are reading
A plan removes the daily "What should we read?" question. Whether you use a printed plan, a children's Bible or an app, choose it in advance and stick with it for at least a month before changing.
4. Make it joyful
If Bible time feels like a punishment, kids will resist. Add small delights: a favorite blanket, a sticker chart, a special mug, or a bedtime treat. Let your child hold the book, turn pages or choose the day's question.
5. Parents go first
Children notice what we love. If they see you reading your own Bible, they will understand it matters. You do not have to be an expert. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (ESV). Let them see you walking by that light.
6. Track it together
A visible chart gives kids a sense of progress. Color a box for each day you read. Celebrate milestones like a full week or a full month with a family treat or a special walk.
7. Expect missed days
Life will interrupt. Do not restart the whole habit, just return the next day. Grace is the point of the gospel, and it applies to family routines too.
8. Keep the end in mind
Paul told Timothy that from childhood he had known "the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15, ESV). That is what you are building toward. Not perfect attendance, but children who know God's Word and the God who speaks in it.
