How to Read the Bible With a 5-Year-Old
2026-10-16
If you have ever opened a Bible at the kitchen table and watched a five-year-old slide under it, you are not alone. Young children can love God's Word, but they need it to meet them where they are. Here is what has worked in real homes.
Keep it short
Five minutes is plenty. A little story, one question, one prayer. A short time every day does far more than a long time once a week, and it leaves them wanting more instead of dreading it.
Tell it, don't just read it
Children this age follow stories, not paragraphs. Tell the story in your own words, or read a version written for little ears. Then, on another day, read the actual verse so they begin to hear the real words of Scripture.
Let them move and talk
Let them act out David and the giant. Let them ask why Jonah ran away. Wiggling is not the same as not listening, and their questions are often the best part.
Pick a steady spot and time
After breakfast, in the car line, or right before bed. The best time is the one you will actually keep. Kids love rhythm, and a familiar spot tells them this is a happy part of the day.
Ask one simple question
Try: "What did God do in this story?" or "What do you think it was like to be there?" You do not need a perfect answer. You are teaching them that the Bible is something we think and talk about together.
End with a short prayer
One sentence from you, or one from them, is enough. "Thank You, God, for taking care of Noah. Please take care of us too."
Do not worry about doing it perfectly
You will miss days. Pick it back up the next morning and keep going. That is how a love for God's Word grows: slowly, gently, and in the ordinary moments.
That is exactly why we built Lantern Trail: one short story a day, written for ages 2 to 4, 5 to 8, and 9 to 12, so the whole family can read the same story together. You can read some of our free Bible stories first, or start your 14-day free trial today.
